Don’t use it wrong! What is the difference between a bacterial culture dish and a cell culture dish?

Publish Time: 2024-12-16     Origin: Site

During experimental operations, the two experimental consumables, bacterial culture dishes and cell culture dishes, are easily confused with each other. However, you need to be aware that if you use the two incorrectly in the experiment, it will have an extremely serious negative impact on the experimental results, and may even cause the entire experiment to fail.

So, how can you quickly differentiate between the two types of petri dishes?

01. Differentiation of uses

bacterial petri dish

Mainly used for the culture of microorganisms, especially the isolation, culture and observation of prokaryotes such as bacteria. It is widely used in research and experiments in biology, medicine, environmental science and other fields, such as identification of bacteria, screening of antibacterial drugs, monitoring of environmental pollution, etc.

It is mainly used for the culture and observation of eukaryotes such as animal cells and plant cells, especially cells that need to grow adherently. These culture dishes play an important role in research and experiments in the fields of biology, medicine, pharmacy, etc., such as cell growth, differentiation, drug screening, etc.

02, material properties

Glass and plastic are two commonly used petri dish materials, and the selection should be based on experimental needs.

Glass petri dishes have high transparency, excellent chemical stability and high temperature resistance, and are suitable for use in experiments that have higher requirements for these properties.

Aijin's bacterial culture dishes and cell culture dishes are made of high-quality transparent polystyrene (PS), which is lightweight, has excellent light transmittance, is durable, and is not easily damaged. In large-scale culture experiments or disposable use scenarios, the advantages of plastic petri dishes are particularly significant, providing scientific researchers with a more efficient choice.

03, appearance characteristics

Bacterial petri dishes are usually designed to be small, with a large mouth and a shallow bottom, making it easy to operate and observe. Among them, the 90mm size is widely used. Some also have special structures such as separated areas to culture multiple bacteria at the same time for easy comparison and observation.

The bottom of the cell culture dish is usually specially treated, such as vacuum plasma treatment (TC treatment), which can effectively promote cell attachment and growth. This type of culture dish usually also has gas exchange holes to continuously supply the oxygen and carbon dioxide required for cell growth. In terms of design, cell culture dishes fully consider cell growth characteristics, such as the size of the culture area and shape. Currently, 100mm cell culture dishes are used very frequently in practical applications.

04. How to use

Although bacterial petri dishes need to be operated under relatively sterile conditions, the requirements are relatively low and can be operated on a clean laboratory bench or in a sterile room.

Cell culture dishes need to be cultured in a strictly controlled environment, such as specific temperature (usually around 37°C), humidity (usually around 95%) and carbon dioxide concentration (around 5%).

05. Surface treatment

The culture surface of the bacterial petri dish is untreated and is very suitable for bacterial culture after adding solid agar medium. Cell culture dishes usually undergo vacuum plasma treatment (TC treatment) on the culture surface to ensure cell adhesion, which is more suitable for adherent cell culture.
